The socialist republican party éirígí has slammed the arrest and detention of one of their members in Newry. The party’s general secretary, Breandán Mac Cionnaith, described the arrest which took place yesterday (Monday) as yet further evidence of political policing by the PSNI. Mac Cionnaith said, “In September last year, Stephen Murney was arrested by the PSNI during a series of raids on homes in the Derrybeg area of Newry. At the time, Stephen had been present during the raids to provide solidarity and advice to those affected by the raids. PSNI members took exception to that and arrested him, also assaulting Stephen in front of many witnesses. He was later spuriously charged with assaulting those who had assaulted him. read full story / add a comment

This call and your response to it are very important to us. Right now we are facing not just another instance of dubious sentencing by the Russian “justice” system or another case of a human life broken by the encounter with the state’s repressive apparatus. Today the authorities have launched against us a repressive campaign without precedent in the recent history of Russia, a campaign whose goal it is to extinguish the left as an organized political force. The recent arrests, threats, beatings, aggressive media attacks and moves towards declaring leftist groups illegal all point to the new general strategy on the part of the authorities, much more cruel and much less predictable than that of recent years. read full story / add a comment

These are the opening words of the current television advertisement campaign being run to convince people to vote in Saturday's referendum, and they reflect what most of us already know about the political system which operates in Ireland. For 20 days now, while most of the world has looked on in dumb silence, the city of Bani Walid, in Libya, has been under indiscriminate shelling from Misrata militias, nominally loyal to the NATO imposed National Transitional Council (NTC.) 73 people detained at Immigration Detentions Centres in Bialystok, Biala Podlaska, Przemysl and Leszowola decided on beginning a hunger strike together. It is not the first protest of detained refugees, but for the first time information about a strike reaches the public. In the past, strikers had been put in isolation and punished in various ways, while the public knew nothing about it. Detainees’ demands include: right to information in a language they comprehend, right to contact the outside world, right to proper healthcare, education for underage detainees, respect for children’s rights, improvement in social conditions within detention centres, end to abuse and to excessive violence, end to criminalizing detainees. Refugees decided to strike together, in all Polish Detention Centres, wishing that their voice will not be ignored nor quenched by the centres’ authorities. read full story / add a comment
