galway / rights, freedoms and repression / press release Wednesday January 10, 2018 13:52 by Horatio Moncur
Parvani Hall stands beautifully and gracefully upon the ancestral lands of Shivam O'Brien, the maker and visionary of this magnificent building. Galway County Council want to knock this building down on the grounds that it is 'not sustainable' yet it is the absolute epitome of sustainable architecture, exemplary in fact. They refused meetings with Shivam, cost him and his family many years of aggravation and 22,000 euros in cost. Support him in his own right, on his own land, to be and build and live peacefully, in beauty and in harmony with the land. read full story / add a comment

The housing crisis is a running sore in Irish society. It cries out for a campaign of ‘people power’ to force through a programme of council house building, rent controls and to end landlord evictions.

For the past two years, People Before Profit has been working with others to help create a coalition that can bring tens of thousands onto the streets.

That coalition is the National Homeless and Housing Coalition. read full story / add a comment

New report analyses developments across Europe and finds:

European governments are leading a race to the bottom which will see average global corporate tax rates hit zero by 2052. A detailed analysis of 17 EU member states and Norway reveals 12 governments have either just cut their corporate tax rate, or are planning to do so in the near future.

Ireland receives a 'red card' in the report, as one of only two countries to receive all red in a traffic light ranking scoring a number of measures identified by civil society as key steps to bring an end to tax dodging.

Half the countries analysed, including Ireland, are found to have harmful tax practices, which can be used by multinational corporations to avoid taxation.

Today the High Court delivered its judgment in the case of Friends of the Irish Environment vs. Fingal County Council.

While dismissing FIE’s challenge to a decision to give Dublin Airport Authority more time to build a third runway at Dublin Airport, the court nevertheless recognised for the first time a constitutional right to environmental protection “that is consistent with the human dignity and well-being of citizens at large’”.

This is the first new constitutional right to be recognised in several decades. read full story / add a comment

Almost ten per cent of whales, dolphins, and porpoises examined as part of a new Irish study were found to have plastics in their digestive tracts.

The study ( https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0269...5204#! ) published in Environmental Pollution found that 8.5 per cent (45 individuals) of Irish cetaceans tested had marine debris in their stomachs and intestines.

Deep-diving offshore species such as True’s and Cuvier’s beaked whales ingested more plastics than individuals from coastal or pelagic species.

Data compiled from 1990-2015 on cetacean stranding and bycatch in Ireland was analysed in the study, with post-mortem examinations carried out on 528 digestive tracts from 11 species. read full story / add a comment
