The Galway Alliance Against War is throwing a New Year’s Day Peace Party in the Rowing Club in Woodquay Galway on January 1st starting at 7pm and admission is FREE. The Guest of Honour will be Malalai Joya, a female member of the Afghan parliament, who has survived 4 assassination attempts – she is hated by both the Karzai regime that banned her from parliament and the Taliban. Human Rights Watch described her as “the bravest woman in Afghanistan”. GAAW has arranged for a telephone link-up with Ms Joya from her base in the mountains of Afghanistan – Galway’s local peace group believes it will be a truly unique experience for people in Galway to hear first hand why the war in Afghanistan is not the solution to the problems of that troubled country. read full story / add a comment

St Stephens Day and 2009 year end The 26th December will as usual have every pack of hounds in the country well-turned out and doing their annual PR piece for hunting. This of course distracts from the fact that all hunts except drag hunts are out to kill and terrorise animals. After all that is why they exist- to abuse animals for fun. Minister O'Dea wrote, "As Minister of Defence in Ireland, I would ask that the Egyptian authorities assist her passage through the Rafah crossing and treat her fairly. With Minister John Gormley poised to ban stag hunting, the group known as Farmers Against Foxhunting and Trespass (FAFT) has just issued the following statement calling for the abolition of all hunting with hounds in Ireland on the grounds that it threatens their livelihoods (crops, property destroyed etc) and criticises the IFA for failing to come down on the side of farmers menaced by hunting. read full story / add a comment

Shannonwatch are concerned at the ongoing use of Shannon airport by companies and planes associated with the illegal US rendition program. Since March 2009, five aircraft that have been identified by Amnesty International, the EU Parliament or other sources have been recorded there. One of these planes, a Gulfstream IV with registration N478GS made news in early October when it was met by British military helicopters on a runway at Birmingham International Airport. IRELAND PALESTINE SOLIDARITY CAMPAIGN PRESS RELEASE, 20/12/09 Irish citizens travel to Middle East in Christmas bid to break Israeli blockade on Gaza Following several months of fundraising, four teams from across Ireland departed on Saturday, 5 December, to travel 4,000 miles across land to Gaza in Palestine to deliver ambulances and humanitarian aid to the besieged people of that tiny region. Concerned Irish citizens from Cork, Derry, Dublin, Galway and Tyrone are bringing two ambulances, a mini-bus, and a truck filled with over 10 tonnes of humanitarian aid. read full story / add a comment

On the 27th of December, 10 Irish people in 3 vehicles loaded with humanitarian aid will attempt to cross into Gaza. They will have spent 3 weeks on the road, and cover over 4,000 miles. The Irish Government is failing children with mental health difficulties. Urgent reform of the mental health system for children and young people under 18 years is desperately needed. In response, the Children’s Rights Alliance and Amnesty International Ireland have brought together 38 NGOs to form the Children’s Mental Health Coalition. The Minister for the Environment Mr. John Gormley was today urged to immediately suspend the licence he granted earlier in the autumn to the Ward Union Stag Hunt following a serious incident last Friday when a deer being hunted by the Ward Union was chased onto the main road between Ashbourne and Slane. The deer, which was hit by an on-coming Mercedes, was seriously injured and had to be put down at the scene. It had been seen exiting Seamus Dardis’s farm having begun its chase from Huntsman Pat Coyles premises. read full story / add a comment

Last month in it's 22ND report, the Independent Monitoring Commission (IMC) alleged that Concerned Families Against Drugs (CFAD) were, 'a vigilante group who was responsible for a number of punishment shootings and pipe-bombings of suspected Drug Dealers' in the North Belfast area. Although, we were surprised and dismayed at these unfounded allegations, given that the IMC had not contacted CFAD before issuing its report. CFAD complained to the IMC through our legal representative and were subsequently invited to meet with the IMC today (8/12/09). read full story / add a comment
