Got this from LabourStart yesterday. This is very disturbing and sinister, and it's not happening in some remote, tin-pot, 3rd World dictatorship!! This is happening in Europe! In Greece, a European Union (EU) Member. And what are the EU, who are so quick to blabber and bleat on about human right's abuses in Libya, Iran, Syria, and other places safely removed from Europe, doing and saying about this? Surprise! Surprise! Nothing, as it's the EU and their austerity policies that have led to this, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if the EU is orchestrating this behind the scenes as an attempt to smash Protests by the People and the Workers against their failed austerity policies. ... read full story / add a comment

Very interesting discussion on Today PK (RTE Radio One) of how media misinformation, most of which originated during the 1981 H Block hunger strikes resurfaced during the release of state papers in 2012.
Allegations that:
- Bobby Sands told the Pope's representative that he would come off the hunger strike;
- that Raymond McCreesh's family forced him to remain on hunger strike;
- that the British agreed the substance of the prisoner's demands between the death of the fourth and fifth hunger striker;

Yesterday saw the first disruption of Shell's work of the New Year with a quickly organised protest called for 10am outside Bellanaboy. Claiming Our Future is campaigning for the introduction of measures to tax wealth. As you all know it is very important that there is a counter argument to the austerity approach being pursued by government.
The type of tax options that are being proposed include
1. A levy on assets and property worth over €1 million
2. High net worth Irish citizens paying their dues here so that the number of tax exiles decreases
3. Eliminating tax breaks for those with high incomes so that they pay their fair share
4. A levy on financial transactions (Tobin Tax)
5. A higher tax rate on incomes over €100k

A sketchy report on the Irish Anti-War Movement website states that a U.S. troop carrier plane was attacked and sabotaged at Shannon airport. From other sources I understand that that Omni used this aircraft as a spare and that was parked in a relatively remote area of the airport when disarmed a day or so ago by having its hydraulic or fuel lines severed. ... read full story / add a comment

Now Michael D has gone a step further from his ceremonial role in supporting war-mongering. He is openly feeding the feel-good factor for the FG-Labour government anti-social economic and political decisions. At a time of extraordinary hardship for the people of Ireland caused by the regressive and pro-business politics of Labour and FG, he comes out to send a Christmas message of "hope" in economic recovery. Today was a very honourable day (18-12-11) when here in Dublin in the garden of Remembrance, we commemorated a great revolutionary martyr. An old friend and ally of Ireland and who had been a leading figure in Libya for the past 42 years.
