Julian Assange marked 6 months circled by British police in the Ecuadoran embassy by speaking from the balcony of the building last night (Dec 20th.) Those gathering in solidarity adopted a festive theme with carols, candles, sharing food and wine. Crowd included included journalist John Pilger, VeteransforPeace, members of the Ecuadoran Community, people who had flown from German and driven from Manchester. Today in Belmullet district court Shell and Mayo County Council stood co-accused in a case for blocking the road during the disastrous attempt to deliver the Tunnel Boring Machine to Shell's tunnelling site at Aughoose in August this year. Statistics from the AFP-PNP over a 33-year period (1978-2010) report an aggregate of 29,553 fatalities in the ongoing conflict between GPH and the CPP-NPA categorized thus: 13,412 Communists (45%), 8,264 military and police (28%) and 7,877 civilians (21%). This further translates into 80 deaths daily for the period: 36 Communists, 23 soldiers and police, and 21 civilians.

When standard military operations and bombing failed to defeat the Mau Mau insurgency of Kenya in the 50s, the British created gangs of friendly tribesmen, who were pretending to be terrorists. These "pseudo gangs," quickly threw the Mau Mau on the defensive by befriending, then ambushing, genuine freedom fighters or guiding the British to freedom fighter camps.
