Claiming Our Future is campaigning for the introduction of measures to tax wealth. As you all know it is very important that there is a counter argument to the austerity approach being pursued by government.
The type of tax options that are being proposed include
1. A levy on assets and property worth over €1 million
2. High net worth Irish citizens paying their dues here so that the number of tax exiles decreases
3. Eliminating tax breaks for those with high incomes so that they pay their fair share
4. A levy on financial transactions (Tobin Tax)
5. A higher tax rate on incomes over €100k

A sketchy report on the Irish Anti-War Movement website states that a U.S. troop carrier plane was attacked and sabotaged at Shannon airport. From other sources I understand that that Omni used this aircraft as a spare and that was parked in a relatively remote area of the airport when disarmed a day or so ago by having its hydraulic or fuel lines severed. ... read full story / add a comment

Now Michael D has gone a step further from his ceremonial role in supporting war-mongering. He is openly feeding the feel-good factor for the FG-Labour government anti-social economic and political decisions. At a time of extraordinary hardship for the people of Ireland caused by the regressive and pro-business politics of Labour and FG, he comes out to send a Christmas message of "hope" in economic recovery. Today was a very honourable day (18-12-11) when here in Dublin in the garden of Remembrance, we commemorated a great revolutionary martyr. An old friend and ally of Ireland and who had been a leading figure in Libya for the past 42 years. Tuesday Dec 14th. Veterans for Peace UK and supporters held a vigil for Bradley Manning at the U.S. Embassy in London. Bradley begins a pre-trial hearing on Friday at Fort Meade, Maryland/USA. Bradley faces charges that could lead to a lifetime in prison.
We call for you to join us and others in solidarity with Bradley- Saturday 17th of December, 1400hrs at the U.S. Embassy. Please join us or initiate solidarity actions in your locale.

The rate of job destruction has accelerated in the quarter July to September
2011. On a seasonally adjusted basis, employment fell by 20,500 (-1.1%) in
the quarter. This follows on from a seasonally adjusted fall in employment
of 4,100 (-0.2%) in Q2 2011. This means that 20,500 more jobs were destroyed
than were created in the quarter. Minister Bruton's "Job Creation" measures
had already been introduced in June. The continuation of the FF/Green
austerity programme by Lab/FG destroyed far more jobs than were created(if

Supporters of Focus Ireland sent almost 3,000 e-mails to TDs and Senators calling for the appointment of a new Minister for Housing and Homelessness to have a voice in deciding the contents of the budget. Unfortunately, the Government decided not to make that appointment before budget day, but the high level of public scrutiny on the issue ensured that the homeless budget was largely protected. While so many areas of expenditure were being cut, the cuts to services to end homelessness were relatively small. So thank you for that support.
