Blasphemous Exhibition

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | press release author Friday April 02, 2010 17:02author by pat c Report this post to the editors

“There is no god higher than truth.”- Ghandi

Thanks to all of the artists who repsonded to the open call for the Blasphemous Project. We look forward to seeing you all at the opening on Good Friday, April 2.

Opening reception Good Friday, April 2 2010, 6-9 pm.

The Irish Museum of Contemporary Art (IMOCA), Ladd Lane, Off Baggot Street, Dublin 2.

By this time most people in Ireland, and indeed many throughout the world, are aware of the ‘Blasphemy Law’ that came into effect January 1st this year. It may seem like the perfect time- or a perfectly awkward time- for such a law. In just the past few months, when most people would probably be more inclined to hear about how their politicians and governments are trying to salvage their economies, we have heard increasingly shocking reports from within the Irish Catholic system; from Germany’s Catholic churches, including abuse cover-ups and priest-shuffling that reportedly includes the now-pope Benedict; murder attempts on Kurt Westergaard and plots -from within Ireland no less- to assassinate Lars Vilks, two artists who were willing to portray the prophet Mohammad.

In light of all of this, to say that this law is focused in the wrong direction is an understatement. With €100,000 bounties issued on artists’ heads by extremist groups, as in Vilks’ case, or with churches asking their parishioners to donate money to help pay the legal fees for the abuses inflicted upon them and their loved ones (as did Dennis Brennan, Bishop of Ferns in County Wexford, Ireland), it would seem that if any new laws regarding religion were needed, they need to be designed to protect us from them.

Regardless of whatever the opinions of those who have worked to produce or support this show, this is not an atheist agenda. Some of the participating artists identify as christians; others as wiccans, pagans, buddhists. As much as it is a direct confrontation of this dangerous law, Blasphemous is a celebration of artistic freedom and intellectual discourse. Perhaps the most blasphemous notion to any religion is the existence and practice of all others, and so keeping that in mind we applaud the diversity of the artists’ practices, if only to present a tableau for debate.

Curated by K. Bear Koss

Intersesting exhibition. A bit too Xtian centered, though definitely worth a look.

Michael Nugent of Atheist Ireland opened the exhibition pointing out that Ireland Blasphemy law was being used by Fundamentalist Islamic States to justify their campaign to have Defamation of Religion made an International criminal offence. Also, a German artist who had drawn cartoons of Jesus had his work published in Greece. Subsequently an International Arrest Warrant for him was issued by a Greek court. A lower German court ordered his extradition but it was overturned on appeal. Still, frightening that this can happen in Europe.

If it was an International criminal offence then you might be extradited to Saudi Arabia...

The Blaphemy law has to go!

NO gods!
NO masters!

plots -from within Ireland no less- to assassinate Lars Vilks,.

there is absolutely no evidence for this claim

To date 7 people were arrested in Ireland in connection to this alleged 'plot'

To date 3 were released with 48 hours, 2 more were released without charge withiin a further 48 hrs, and so far only 2 people have appeared in court.

One of those was charged with immigration-related 'offences' relating to his identity, and the other was rather vaguely charged with 'making an SMS of a menacing nature'.

It has not even been specified to whom this person allegedly sent the alleged menacing SMS, so for all we know it could have been to his neighbour, or his bookie, or his milkman, if he ever even sent such an SMS, something which is far from proven

So neither has been charged with anything that could be claimed to be 'terrorist' or even 'murder' related.

so despite the media hullabaloo there has been ZERO evidence presented to support these allegations.

Freedom of expression includes the freedom to irritate and provoke. Cartoonists implicitely assume that meaning of freedom.

We cannot control whatever mass emotions may result from antagonist free expression. Mahatma Gandhi understood that fact from his experience of mass rioting between Hindus and Muslims during the Indian independence crisis of 1947, when 5 million people moved frantically from Pakistan to India and in the opposite direction. He resorted to a public fast in a successful effort to stop the cycle of public taunts, counter taunts and subsequent murderous riots between members of the two religious communities. The poster of the short article that begins this thread may not have factored in this historical episode when he began the piece with the quote from Gandhi: “There is no god higher than truth.”- Ghandi.

Freedom of expression in liberal western society also includes the freedom to self-regulate your individual urge to antagonize and provoke based on a commonsense calculation of the ability of those who are antagonized to control their emotions.

Dutch liberal ideologists have been shocked by the results of some antagonist free expression during the past few years.

The word "fag" means different things in America and UK/Ireland.

In Ireland and Britain a "fag" is a cigarette.

In the US "a fag" is a slang word for a homosexual.

"God dates Fags" would be regarded as obscene blasphemy by many in America.

The Enlightenment was and is against clerical interference in education and politics in the name of theological notions that do not have much to do with the "price of fish" nor sound transparent accountability to voters. In Britain, France and Russia the formative revolutions and civil wars were all against the abuse of office by the clergy even before the abuse of office by kings. The US deliberately denied "establishments of religion" because the founding fathers all came from families that at sometime fled persecution by an establishment of religion - and the same for most migrants to the USA since - including Moslems.

In the Internationale - a song which all true lefties can still agree with - the last verse looks to the day when the vultures [landlords] and crows [clergy] disappear and the sun will shine for ever. Hear! Hear!

"Mais si les corbeaux, les vautours
Un de ces matins disparaissent,
Le soleil brillera toujours."

By the way the Moslem community considers the Trinity well and truly blasphemous so what happens when they bring a writ on the matter - in Ireland??

If Muslim fundamentalists were to bring a blasphemy charge against belief in the Trinity into the courts they'd lose it with heavy costs. The preamble to Bunreacht na hEireann invokes the Trinity, so whatever the constitution affirms cannot be judged a blasphemy. Up Dev!

it's almost as if Dev were able to foresee a future day when Zionist racists, not content with the racist destruction they have created in their little racist state, would attempt to create similar divisions in our society by attempting to demonise Islamic people by ridiculously, and without any basis in fact, attempting to create hatred by claiming that they would challenge, through the Irish courts, christian teaching as 'blasphemous'.

it's almost as if Dev understood the petty little hatreds which perpetually simmer and permeate in the minds of modern-day racists such as Frank Adam.

Hi,

I'm Fionn mac Cumhaill . (You can call me Finn McCool if you like.)

I always resent how the Christians bought their superstisions to Ireland.

We should never have captured St. Patrick.

The Morrigan was an interesting Irish goddess.

The Morrrigan is forgotten now.

We Irish are now legally not allowed to disagree with equally daft religions imposed from the middle east.

They might be "offended".

Poor crathurs.

HB, You rant on about 'zionist racists' yet any non-muslims living in a state following Islamic law only qualify for the status of dhimmitude which basically makes them second-class citizens subject to extra taxes, prevented from building any new places of worship etc. Where are facilities catering for Christians, Jews and non-believers in Saudi Arabia? now there is a state based on ethnic and religious chauvinism.

A blasphemy law goes against freedom of speech, a concept you and your fellow Islamists find abhorrent of course! Neither Canon law or sharia law should have any status in a true republic!

your rant is most peculiar. it is chock full of the usual non-sequiturs and unsubstantiated allegations one comes to expect from foaming-at-the-mouth racist Islamaphobes.

do you always rant like that?
Does anyone ever pay any attention to your rants?
Do you have to pay someone to follow you round and wipe up the spittle?

Talk about 'pot calling kettle', anti-semites like you always cover up their bigotry with the old line "oh, it's only zionism I hate", which is up there with "I'm not a racist but..." and you can't answer any of my points on islamic intolerance.

Off you go now and play with your Osama dolly jihad-boy!

author by Hbpublication date Fri Apr 09, 2010 23:40author address author phone Report this post to the editors

how desperate are you?
more drooling-at-the-mouth ranting - curiously, you claim to hate all religion yet for some reason the only religion you have disparaged in your two spittle-filled rants at me, has been the Muslim religion. this is curious behaviour for one that claims to hate all religion.

You can fling your slurs all you want but it is obvious to anyone paying attention that both you and the proven racist, Frank Adam, are only interested in attacking one religion, the Muslim religion, so it is equally obvious that you both are racist Islamophobes, masquerading as anti-religion pro-secularists.

You pair of obvious pro-zionist racists ain't fooling anyone

Islamic intolerance is in no way a problem in Irish society despite both your and Frank Adam's sly little attempts to infer that it is an issue. The intolerance of racist Islamophobes is a far greater danger to Irish society than any imaginary 'threat' you pair of racist idiots can attempt to bullshit about.

I went to this earlier today. It was alright - not anywhere near as shocking as i would have hoped.

I liked the 'Fuck Christmas' sculpture/light thing, simple yet effective.

The God Dates Fags painting on the door was good too.

The rest of it was a little underwhelming to be honest. What was the deal with the churches in the garden sheds?

author by Atheist.publication date Sat Apr 10, 2010 16:39author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Nothing to do with "race".

Blasphemy is what one superstition says about another superstition.

We atheists are the ultimate blasphemers to all religions.

On the other hand............... we atheists just laugh at all religions.

fine - feel free to laugh at them all - I certainly have no problem with that, and think they all deserve it

but I do have a problem when, under the guise of pro-secularism, a known Zionist-racist like Frank Adam, and an obvious Islamophobe like 'Freeman', decide to team-up and proceed only single out Islam for criticism

I'm sure not going to join that 'Church of God' outfit since it has got its theology in a twist. Hell is not reserved for atheist or anybody. Divine mercy is offered to all who change heart and take a different direction. Talk about mercy, not hell. Hell is other people, not a specific place. I don't know where I'll end up personally, but reading some of these posts feels like purgatory.

US police yesterday shot dead two gunmen who opened fire outside an Islamophobic exhibition and conference in Garland, Texas . The American Freedom Defense Initiative, which organised the event, is listed by the Southern Poverty Law Center as an anti-Muslim hate group . Sunday's keynote speaker had been Geert Wilders  from the Dutch Party for Freedom . The show included a Muhammad Cartoon Exhibit with a $10,000 prize contest for the best new anti-Muslim cartoon .

There are early depictions of mohammed by his followers, and the prohibition of artisitic depictions of mohammed did not happen until about the 16th or 17th century...

There are plenty of drawings of mohammed out there whether you like it or not.... Drawing mohammed or what you think of him should not be made illegal.

Islam should have no standing in modern society,if we are to keep our societies safe, and just..

The charge of blasphemy is only for those who fear the truth being exposed, thats the only purpose it serves.

Sane, normal people will come to their own conclusions about this and all the media spin surrounding it.

Have a read of this article on mohammed; http://www.zombietime.com/mohammed_image_archive/islami...full/
