Mary speaks about her husband's jailing.

Mary speaks about her husband, a local hero, the devestating effect Shell has had on the local community and the events which see him serving seven months in jail.

Local Erris fisherman Pat O`Donnell was jailed for seven months on 10/02/2010 for convictions of breach of the peace and of "obstructing' a Garda. An outspoken critic Shell`s experimental gas pipeline through his legal fishing grounds in Broadhaven Bay Erris Co. Mayo a special area of conservation On 11th June 2009, Pat O'Donnell's boat was sunk by 4 armed and masked men in Broadhaven Bay. Later that month both Pat O'Donnell and his son Jonathan were arrested in Broadhaven Bay just prior to the arrival of Shell's pipe-laying vessel, the Solitaire. Both fishermen's boats were impounded, yet no charges were brought against Pat and charges were later dropped against Jonathan. Almost identical arrests occurred in 2008 again just prior to the Solitaire's arrival.

Commenting on the jailing of Pat ODonnell, Terence Conway stated Once again the jailing of Pat ODonnell shows selective prosecution on behalf of the Gardaí. Pat O Donnell was picked out of a crowd of 60 people. The sentences are totally disproportionate to any alleged law-breaking and seem to be a punishment for opposing the Governments' facilitation of Shell.

Ho, Ho, Infact! You r so wise! You know about SCIENCE and FACTS! You must be real clever!! Not like dose silly Shell to Sea folks, what EVER can have gotten into their silly little heads!

Of course the mercury fromShell's refinery will do nobody any harm, and you know it Infact, because a Shell SCIENTIST said it! So it must be true!! Only a complete moron would disagree with FACTS from a SCIENTIST!!

In fact I'm willing to go even further than you Infact and I will bet you your science degree that mercury is actually good for you!! Heavy metals in food and air have been shown to reduce cognitive ability over a long period, and everyone knows too much thinking is bad for society!! So roll on the refinery, and roll on the thousands of tonnes of mercury, arsenic and other metals in Broadhaven Bay!! Yipee!!

The serious point I'm trying to make here is that an over credulous approach discredits science. With the right funding, and by setting the parameters of your investigation before it starts, a powerful funder can often induce a study to generate a misleading result which suits their interests, or cover up a problem in the making. That's where we got Thalidomide, BSE, and a host of other modern ills.

Wake up!

Just like shells Phd Marine Biologist who stated to the EPA, that the metal will be so fine it won't sink to the bottom of the sea, after asking 5 or 6 times he relented and said it would sink but wouldn't do any damage to the fish. Then when he was asked where do $hell fish sleep , he didn't know or played stupid. Imagine that, it's on record with the EPA so dispute that, Shell fish sleep in the sand which will be toxic with mercury, copper and many other heavy metals that are toxic to humans that eat the fish.
Many Fish shops are watching closely to sea what happens in Erris , for I've been told that if shell gets the go ahead with this pipeline, that they won't be buying any more fish from this area,
One more thing ,, The Chief should not have been found Guilty and put in Prison, wait till you sea all the ships from all over Ireland and beyond this SUMMER. SEA U THEN.

Scare mongering again!

See what science has to say on this issue.
"Mercury levels in yellowfin tuna caught off the coast of Hawaii have not changed in 27 years, despite a considerable increase in atmospheric mercury during this time, according to a new study. The findings suggest that the high levels of mercury that have been found in tuna and other ocean fish may not be coming from pollution, but from natural sources."

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2003/12/0312050533...6.htm

And it has even been proven in a court of law.
"The Judge ruled that "there is no dispute that most of the methylmercury in the ocean exists completely independently of human activity." Dr. Francois Morel, a noted Princeton University environmental scientist, testified that the percentage of mercury in tuna that originates from human sources "is either zero or 1.5 per cent."

And " The court declares that "methylmercury in fish, including tuna, does not respond to human pollution, and is a natural part of the product's environment."

http://www.consumerfreedom.com/news_detail.cfm/h/3033-m...urces.

And even more
"There's considerable evidence that the amount of mercury in fish has remained the same (or even decreased) during the past 100 years.
One team of researchers from Duke University and the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum compared 21 specimens of Atlantic Ocean blue hake preserved during the 1880s with 66 similar fish caught in the 1970s. They found no change at all in the concentration of mercury"

http://fishscam.com/mercuryMyths.cfm

Now, is there some science out there to dispute these FACTS!

Maybe if people did more research and less assuming we would all be better off!

Health Alerts http://www.edf.org/page.cfm?tagID=17694
This reports states that you can not eat most fish, even once a month because of the Mercury and pcbs.
All it will take is one of Erris fish suppliers to have a test on their stock and when the Mercury levels are too High no one will buy Erris Fish , WHY because Mercury an PCBs cause devastating health problems and even death in children. WHAT NO more fish an chips Thats what the Chief Pat O'Donnel was trying to prevent an now sit in a prison cell while the other fishermen kook the other way, STAND UP FOR YOUR Family and the people you sell fish to, because if this pipeline gets the go ahead then the fish will mostly be poisoned unfit to eat. Our Prays are with you Mary an Family.

It beggars believe that those 58 fishermen are all too dumb to see what is happening around them, and that pat O'Donnell and his brothers are the only ones who see the truth, that's over 90% of the fishing community who are happy to take the compensation.
Maybe there is more to this than we know!
I wonder has anyone ever explain to them what WILL happen once the refinery is producing.

"plenty of clear water ?" Won`t be much of that about once Shell are in opperation in the Bay.

The multinational oil company Shell has, over a 25 year period, systematically polluted a huge underground reserve of potential drinking water in an aquifer near the city of Diyarbakir in Southeast Turkey where up to two million people live.
archive.greenpeace.org/comms/brent/mar26.html

People living in the Niger Delta have to drink, cook with and wash in polluted water. They eat fish contaminated with oil and other toxins - if they are lucky enough to be able to still find fish.

Shell and the Nigerian National
Petroleum Corporation (NNCP) failed to maintain its facilities causing numerous
avoidable spills in the proximity of villages and that the resulting contamination of water, soil
and air had serious short and long-term health impacts

Respect, solidarity, & blessings to the O'Donnells & the Erris dissenters. Maybe Shell & the Gov't are learning that some people can't be bought. Pat O'Donnell is a brave, kind gentleman as demonstrated in his record of saving lives in Erris.

Bless the united couples and united families of Erris who create local solidarity to impose civility on the market ( Shell) and the State ( Irish). Through their demands for people respect rather than profit respect they remind us of the importance of values in society and draw our attention to being human rather than being reduced to compliant economic objects. When will 'they' ever learn? Thank you all for keeping this lesson before all of us everyday one way or another.
