Sinn Féin: No Outcry over Fishing Jobs Loss

NO OUTCRY OVER FISHING JOBS LOSS

The drastic reduction in the Irish fishing fleet leaves
hundreds of crewmen without any form of redundancy
payment, a spokesman for Republican Sinn Féin said today.

Joe Lynch from Beechgrove Avenue in Limerick, a former
bosun with Irish Shipping said that up to one thousand
jobs are to be lost but there is no national outcry over
what is a huge human tragedy for the families of
the crewmen.

If these jobs were in a factory or an industrial zone
there would be anger and rage and calls for action
he said. Yet because they are crewmen on trawlers
their plight is being ignored by the politicians.

The very same type of thing happened with Irish
Shipping. While the officers and executives were
well looked after in terms of redundancy payment,
the ordinary seamen were given a pittance after
years of service.

This cutting of the fishing fleet is yet another outcome
of EU policy which is now acting against the interests
of Irish workers.

Gradually the Irish fishing fleet will be reduced and
eventually outnumbered by the fleets of the larger
EU maritime nations who plunder the stocks off
our coasts.

What we are seeing now is the latest move towards
the EU introducing giant factory ships into Irish
waters.

I see that Irish shipping is now paying some of its workers 4 euro an hour.

Once again Sinn Féin hit the nail on the head. I will certainly be voting for Mary Lou McDonald in the next euro elections.

This is REPUBLICAN Sinn Fein saying this. NOT Sinn Fein the sellout party. Two different organisations mate.

Doesn't say that in the title. Obviously whoever wrote this wants people to vote for Sinn Féin, so that's what I'll do. Slån.

Well, im sorry, but if you actually READ the article - Republican Sinn Fein is mentioned numerous times - including - ""Sinn Féin Poblachtach"" written in big bolded letters at the top. You cant really miss it unless...

Anyways, they are Sinn Fein, just as much as the 'Communist Party of Ireland' is the 'Communist Party'.

This proposal has been flagged for some time but the detail has only come out now. It's news but not a bolt from the blue.

Given overfishing by everybody (also flagged for decades) the idea is to reduce the coastal fleet by 35%, with €42m to buy in the skippers' vessel licences. They have to the end of April and it is voluntary not compulsory.

It will be a problem for fishermen who started in the recent past, but they will know of the flagged problems, and they took that chance when choosing to work in a dying industry.

Remember bus conductors, anyone? The under-30s think they are something to do with an orchestra.
