Demands made for Derry City Council to act on its promise to act on Military Raytheon

Council meeting

Both FEIC and DAWC were today calling on the council to stand by that commitment, following evidence unearthed by the North West Telegraph that Raytheon had been developing the Joint Effects Tactical Targeting System (JETTS) for the MoD, which aims to improve "lethality". During a meeting, Raytheon bosses confirmed to the council that the revelations in the documents, obtained from Invest NI under the Freedom of Information Act, were true.

Last ditch by FEIC to save Derry's Democracy from the Raytheon Company

Presentation made by FEIC to Derry City Council on Thursday 16 November 2006 in a last ditch effort to make them hold to their own 2004 policy against the arms trade. Read clear indictment here.

http://www.blackshamrock.org/article/133

Sinn Fein councillor Gerry MacLochlainn is expected to put forward a motion at Thursday's Policy and Resources Committee meeting calling on Raytheon to stick solely to civilian work in Derry.

At a full council meeting three weeks ago, the council voted through an SDLP motion to lobby the British and Irish governments for tougher controls on the arms trade after a debate on Raytheon's operations in the city.DUP councillor Gregory Campbell, however, argued that while everyone in Derry would prefer environmentally sound investors, the North West was in no position to be choosy.

anyone got a link to those council meeting minutes?

I think it's wild ironic that the Raytheon 9/10 are before the courts on Thursday 23rd on charges that, as the law stands, have to be heard before non-jury Diplock courts and that, the next day, SF are supposed to make a deal of some sort with the UK government and the DUP, with the Sinners giving some sort of commitment about supporting Law & Order in the 6 counties. Where is the outrage at the continuance of Diplock? When are we going to see SF out on the streets demanding an end to this disgrace? When is Mac Lochlainn and the others going to come clean about their acceptance of Raytheon in Derry?

Has anyone heard what happened to the Raytheon 9 / 10?
I haven't heard anythin on the news.
I suppose the corporate driven legal system have been influenced by the big boys in raytheon to put the whole thing back yet again and make them wait and suffer even more.

Don't think anyone gives a s**t any more to be honest Jamie.
Supporting the R9 now seems to be more of a social event as most of the interest around the R9 involves people going out and getting pissed and listening to live bands. People are more concerned with indulging their own selfish interests than supporting people who face going to jail because they stood up and fought for their convictions.
The general public are a bunch of fickle b*****ds.

Ah, Derry City Council, when it comes to a fight between right and wrong, big and small, the ordinary people against big business, they'll always back those with the money.

First of all, Derry Anti War Coalition had decided not to try to get crowds outside the court on 23rd November as the 9 are being returned for 'mention' in court every 4-6 weeks and people cannot keep taking time off work. The court appearance on the 23rd was another routine appearance with no new information coming out of it about when the trial might be . The prosecution said that it wasn't ready to proceed yet as it had not had a chance to view the CCTV footage. Yet I had been shown the CCTV footage when I was questioned at the end of Oct - so it does seem that one arm of the state doesn't know what the other arm has available to it!

As we understand it, there be some indication at the next court appearance - on 4th January - as to what the final charges will be, whether they are likely to charge me, and when the trial is likely to be. But then again, there may not! Just as soon as we have any news on the charges or a trial date it will be on the website www.raytheon9.org.

We are getting wonderful support from activists across Ireland (and the world) and we really appreciate it. Various Dublin branches of the Irish Anti War Movement have raised over 1,000 euro over the last three weeks and Galway Anti War Alliance raised 400 euro. This money was mainly used to send four of the nine to Lebanon to gather evidence and find witnesses who can help us explain why it was necessary to take the action we did, when we did.

A big thanks to all for your solidarity.

Yeah short memory span but you see a great deal of people from Derry work in or have connections to Du Pont and the companies you describe and they have put bread on the table in Derry for years. People would not dare start a campagin against them as it would upset too many people in Derry. Lets face it if they did not speak out against these companies at the height of the troubles when they were producing materials and equipment for the british forces of occupation then they are hardly going to start now. Raythen is a soft target because they employ a few people (many of them English I am told) and they have not been ingrained in Derry long enough to have a lot of the local populace dependant on them. Still I suppose we have to start somewhere.

Can we not be a little more positive people. Lets not forget that these people may go to jail for their convictions. They knew that before they raided the weapons factory and it did not stop them. The least we can do now is remain positive for them as I am sure this is a difficult time for them with the threat of going to prison hanging over them.

I think you'll find they're anti-british David. Raytheon work for the british mod so its only natural that Republican terrorists get involved in the anti-Raytheon movement. Unfortunately this has had a negative effect for the protestors who are actually are anti-war as they are now viewed in the same light as the ejits who still destroy this country and terrorise its people. Yeah I know, its pretty f****d up.

Ah, but you'll find Kev, as with Sinn Feign, that yesterday's anti-british Republicans are today's pro-british Republicans. The dissident IRAs will surely find that a corrupt leadership is like leprosy, it can loose you your arms.

Anti-war does not mean that you have to be against all war but only certain wars. The anti-war of the Raytheon 9 is against the wars waged by the British and their Allies like the Americans in Ireland and around the world. And any other country that thinks it has the right to invade another country for the purpose of exploiting its resources or for some sort of gain. Just because some of the Raytheon 9 are members of the Real IRA does not mean they are any less devoted to peace than people who who refuse to take up arms and fight. They took up arms to bring peace to an occupied and divided country. The Real IRA are fighting the British to get them out of Ireland where they have no right to be. If the British had not invaded our country then they would not have had to take up the armed struggle. Therefore the memers of the Raytheon 9 who have taken up arms to free their country are trying to end the war started by the British so they are anti-war. If you do not believe in them then do us all a favour and go live in England. And take Adams and the rest of the sellouts with you.
