#FirstWeds Talk to Look at Community Resistance to Water Commodification.

category dublin | bin tax / household tax / water tax | event notice author Monday February 02, 2015 20:00author by Comhlámh Report this post to the editors

Join us for a film screening and panel discussion where we’ll draw on the experience of one community’s struggle against water privatisation in the Global South (El Alto, Bolivia) and relate it to the Irish movement against water charges

From El Alto to Edenmore .... Twisted Pepper -Weds 4th Feb @ 7pm.
firstweds_comlamh_water_wars_feb04.jpg

This #FirstWeds event will take on a slightly different format. We’ll start by screening the feature-length documentary, Water Rising, that focuses on the struggle against water privatisation in Bolivia. The film by Muireann De Barra and Aishling Crudden captures a transition from a failed private water service back to a publicly controlled and more accountable one.

Following this, we’ll have a panel discussion that will respond to the film and reflect on what lessons (if any) that we can take from this in Ireland.

Speakers on the night will include: Oisín Coghlan, Director of Friends of the Earth; Dr. Gemma Mc Nulty, lecturer in Latin American Studies in DCU; Cat Inglis of Communities Against Water Charges; Dr. Rory Hearne, lecturer in political and economic geography in NUI Maynooth. Karen Jeffares will be moderator on the night.

We’re looking forward to this one! Should be a vibrant start to our 2015 #FirstWeds series. Come along and participate in the discussion – 7pm, February 4th, The Twisted Pepper, Middle Abbey Street, Dublin.
