RNU Call on Republican Communities To Be Vigilant After Short Strand Attack

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | press release author Tuesday June 21, 2011 14:15author by RNU PRO - Republican Network for Unity Report this post to the editors

REPUBLICAN NETWORK FOR UNITY CHAIRPERSON, CARL REILLY has asked Republican communities across Belfast and beyond to be vigilant after Monday night’s sectarian attack on the Short Strand area.

REPUBLICAN NETWORK FOR UNITY CHAIRPERSON, CARL REILLY has asked Republican communities across Belfast and beyond to be vigilant after Monday night’s sectarian attack on the Short Strand area.

Reilly said; ‘The disgraceful attack on Short Strand residents was clearly organised by the UVF and we call their cessation into question. Local residents have told RNU that the RUC/PSNI did nothing to stop 100 masked and armed men who stormed the area from the Albertbridge Road. Who proceeded to attack scores of Nationalist homes. Had it not been for the youth of the area repelling the attackers, it is quite possible someone would have lost their life.

A number of RNU Activists were on the ground in Short Strand last night, where they witnessed sustained petrol bomb attacks on that proud community by Loyalists. Where dozens of senior citizens and families had to flee their homes to safety. We also seen numerous young people who sustained injuries due to plastic bullets fired by the re-branded RUC.’

Mr. Reilly concluded; ‘The Republican Network for Unity commend the Short Strand community for the effective defence of their area in the face of Loyalist and RUC/PSNI aggression. We offer them our full support and solidarity’.
